District Heating Feasibility Study

Cynergin was invited to carry out a feasibility study into the potential for a district heating scheme in Central Bolton.

We examined the potential to use the Council’s estate as an anchor load, extending the heat supply to other users when there was excess energy to meet the demand.

We considered options such as gas, biomass and energy-from-waste.

Our recommendation was a combination of gas-fired combined heat-and-power (CHP) plant, supported by boilers using a by-product from composting.

The scheme identified an annual reduction of 1,482 tones CO2 (3% of entire Council Carbon footprint) and savings of £1.4m over the lifetime of the project.

The Council is considering its options.
