University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust

The Trust operates from three main acute hospital sites: Furness General Hospital in Barrow, Royal Lancaster Infirmary in Lancaster and Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal, plus two smaller community sites.

Cynergin was selected as Preferred Bidder and is currently undertaking a detailed Investment-Grade Audit (IGA) to determine the precise measures to be implemented.

The Trust needs to replace its ageing heating infrastructure and to improve its resilience against potential supply failures – all at a time when it is reorganising its financial situation in the face of challenging budget constraints.

The Trust requires a self-funding solution, where the net savings in energy costs outweigh all project costs for each and every year of the project's lifetime.

Technical Solution

The focus in Phase 1 of the IGA was the largest energy consumers: Furness General Hospital and the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

In both cases the first priority is to reduce energy-demand, which will be achieved via a range of measures including lighting, controls-integration, HVAC (pump upgrades and variable-speed drives) and others.

CHP will substantially-reduce the Trust's energy costs and carbon emissions. The existing steam heat-distribution infrastructure will be maintained, and the principal heat source will be the CHPs, utilising waste-heat boilers.

The hospitals' existing steam boilers will be retained, in order to provide back-up without any additional capital cost to the Trust – thereby improving resilience with maximum value-for-money.

The implementation programme has been designed to minimise any interruption to the Trust's daily operations, and to eliminate any unplanned disruption.

Commercial Solution

We have proposed a £5m off-balance sheet solution to the Trust Board, and are awaiting their feedback.
