Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust

Overview

The Trust provides acute and adult mental health services to 484,000 patients in Northern Devon, across more than 1,300 square miles.

Services are provided through North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple (341 beds over five floors) and 21 community hospitals (a further 303 beds across the region).

The Trust's estates team, led by its Director of Facilities Services Iain Roy, has a detailed understanding of the potential to save energy within the site, but they required the support of an experienced contractor to provide a guaranteed estate-wide solution, in order to underpin the substantial investment required.

Cynergin was chosen as the Trust's preferred supplier in spite of stiff competition from major contractors and large utility companies. The Investment-Grade Audit (IGA) commenced in April 2014.

Technical Solution and Benefits

The detailed technical solution will be defined during the IGA (taking place during spring and summer 2014).

The initial focus is on reducing demand, with a focus on lighting, controls, HVAC (pumps, fans), cooling, pipe-insulation and transformer-optimisation.

On the supply side, the Trust is keen to explore biomass options at several of its sites, in order to reduce long-term cost and CO2 emissions. Installations will be sized to maximise Government incentives and to minimise risk of price fluctuations to the Trust.

Other technologies under review are micro-CHP, electric vehicles and reducing IT-related energy costs.

Finally the Trust is keen to implement a solution to reduce long-term maintenance costs across its distributed site. Part of the reason for Cynergin's selection was its ability to focus beyond the 'obvious' energy-saving solutions.

Subject to the IGA, Cynergin expects to deliver a 12% reduction in energy-demand, coupled with substantial cost-savings derived from more efficient supply. These figures will be updated when the project enters the Build Phase, later in the year.
