Heat Map and Energy-Saving Measures for Walnuts Shopping Centre

Following a Carbon Trust survey, Cynergin was invited to study the potential to upgrade the heating system and to introduce energy-saving measures at the Walnuts Shopping Centre in Orpington City Centre.

Heat was provided by a 1980s high/medium-temperature hot water district-heating system, which was costly to maintain and expensive to run.

Cynergin recommended a range of demand-reduction measures, coupled with a more efficient energy-supply solution.  These included:

  • Demand-side: variable-speed drives, run-around coils, controls, swimming-pool covers, plate-heat exchangers;
  • Supply side: combined heat-and-power (CHP), boiler improvements.

We identified savings of £164,000, against a capital investment of £990,000, along with the option to deliver the project via a guaranteed “ESCo” energy-saving contract.
